The next time you go down to your coffeeshop, or hawker centre, take a look around. Do you find it odd, that even after 40 yrs of Independence, you can rarely find a table with a good mix of races?? Maybe just a small number. Don't go scouring at what they eat; we are well-known for our wonderful eating habits and variety of food that we consume. Lest you are telling me that unifies us as being Singaporean??
Its pointless to put the finger to our folks for having created such a stereotype in us. Yepz, I mean, I'm pretty sure some of us have had our folks tellin' us not to mix with someone from another race, just because of certain stereotypes. We can't fault them, because they came through a time when inter-racial tensions were high. Think the Maria Hertogh era and the bus riots in the 60s.
But do we live in such an era now?? Do we hang out and do stuff with people from the other races?? How often do we club with our friends from another race? Or have a good chillout session?? I just went to have prata with the amigos and it was this conversation that was sparked by our wonderful mother hen (Jon Yap, for those who don't know) that set me thinking.
Yes, we do find it easier to relate to our problems and joys with someone from the same race, but hey, if I can find solace in people who aren't Indiano too, its worth giving it a shot right? Because, if we do not take the initiative now, we will only be multiracial by name.
I'll end off with a quote from good ol' Russell Peters, "Just mix around. Women take your chances. We will all be eventually a high breed of humans that is mostly Chinese and Indian. You may run away from us now, but you can never hide from the inevitable." :p
