Meet the Cuckoos..Meeting Anu (not to be associated with the title) is always one filled with lotsa laughs, and at the end of the day, you ponder over certain things. I just cannot believe, that once, we were running around school in uniform, and now, she's out there in the working world. Dishing out financial plans (I badly need 'em.. Pple ard me call me, the perennial spendthrift), and teaching me out to invest. Cool stuff.
But what got me to ponder more, was about courtesy. That Singapore, as according to a Readers Digest poll,
rates highly as a
DISCOURTEOUS city. FYI, the Big Apple heads this infamous list. It goes alot to show, that as much as we've developed over the years, the very basic thing called courtesy, seems to be somewhat, absent in our society. Why do I say so?
Tell me you've not experienced at least one of the following:-
1) You're at your void deck, walking towards a lift that's just had a couple of people in it. You walk hurriedly towards it, and you find the doors slowly closing, before you. Like macam, you aren't invited to what could be the biggest lift party in ages.
2) You're about to board a bus, during the peak periods. Lotsa people rushing in, equals to lotsa shoving. There are those, who stand at the sides, and try to squeeze into the centre, in order to board the bus. Then, there are those, who could give the likes of Fabio Cannavaro and Jamie Carragher a run for their money. In that, you just are marked out of space, and cannot enter from the sides.
Which is why, it often surprises me why we still aren't in the World Cup, nevermind that I miss that one bus that takes me home.
3) Suppose you make it through, albeit weaving past these passengers. You realise, that there a few seats, with "holes" near the window seats, but fringe seats are taken up. You'd forgive them, if they're lugging along huge-ass bags, that require another seat (though someone forgot to tell 'em that they could place these bags on their laps).
Can someone explain to me, the logic of these "holes"?? Trying to save it for the random hot chic/dude that would enter the bus? Or just, territorising your place?
4) The classic pregnant lady who is left standing in the train, whilst passengers feint to be asleep, or be bo-chap about it.
5) When was the last time someone held the door open for you? Nuff said..
If they did, did you even shoot back a smile/thanks/a kind gesture? Or just walked along, thinking you were royalty?
Amazing. And I put it down to one attitude, predominant amongst us, Singaporeans..
KIASUISM..
Wanting to be the first in everything. Which is why, Hello Kitty, Singapore Pools and NDP Tickets (in the past, that is. Thank God for e-balloting) rake in snaking queues, with some even camping the night before.
Its good to be kiasu in some things, but there has to be a cut-off..
Unless an individual starts making a change in attitudes, expect to see more of this..
Who knows, we might even top, yet another list..
